Why walk 600 miles...

Challenge 60 – 23^rd April 2014 to 21^st June 2014

 

On 17^th May 2012 I was diagnosed with a Malignant Melanoma, {my two sons have nicknamed it “The Melodrama!}, which is a particularly nasty form of skin cancer.  The Macmillan nurse who counselled both my wife and I was truly magnificent: we will always be indebted to her.  The NHS has recently suffered from bad press but their rapid response and removal of the offending area and lymph nodes meant that within six weeks I knew I had been a lucky man and was given the all clear..., other friends of mine haven’t been so lucky.  So it’s time for me to put something back.  I am going to attempt to raise £6,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support by walking 600 miles in 60 continuous days around the South West Coast Path in my 60^th year.  Challenge 60 will commence on 30^th April at Minehead, Somerset and finish on 28^th June 2014 in Poole, Dorset.  This walk is described as challenging when just doing a few days at a time...  It is not only the distance and continual walking that is daunting but steep cliff ascents/descents will need a lot of physical preparation.  I have now found out it will be the equivalent to climbing Everest!  I will be writing a diary blog including photos, outlining the trip, and update pages in Just Giving website, Facebook etc
